Mumbai airport floats
tenders for DFMDs
Mumbai
International Airport has floated tenders for the supply of Door Frame
Metal detectors (DFMD) for installation at the Chattrapati Shivaji
International Airport. The tender will include both supplying and
installation of the metal detectors and the tender has been floated to
enhance the security of the airport. Mumbai airport authorities have
specified that the DFMD must adhere to the NIJ standards 0601.02 of
National Institute of Justice, US department of Justice. Airport
authorities have said that interested parties could file their
Expression of Interest within a week starting February 2, 2012.
World’s largest
biometric unique ID system in India reaches 120 million
Morpho Technologyhas has played a significant support role in enabling
the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to close 2011
with an important milestone of issuing its 100 millionth
identification number. To date, 120 million numbers have been issued.
Officially launched in September 2010, Aadhaar is the world’s largest
biometrics-based identity programme. The identification number has the
laudable objective of providing India’s 1.2 billion residents with
secure access to benefits and services (education, telecom, medical
care, banking and financial services) as well as political and
economic rights. The issuing of numbers has proceeded at a good pace
as proved by this achievement by the Morpho-Mahindra Satyam
consortium, which has played a pivotal role in the program.

Jay Narayan Vyas is Hon. Minister for Health & Tourism for the state

Maharashtra will spend Rs 2 cr to watch prisoners 24x7
The
Maharashtra government has okayed Rs 7.5-crore modernisation plan in
all the central jails in the state which will be put under 24/7 CCTV
surveillance. Criminal activities within jails have been a major cause
of concern for cops as well as the government. In the past, local
police have recorded series of clashes between groups inside prisons.
To put an end to the increasing menace, last year, jail authorities
had put forth a proposal for CCTV cameras under the modernisation plan
to impose round-the-clock surveillance. As per the data made available
by jail authorities, the state has cleared funds to the tune of Rs
7.58 crore under the modernisation plan for state prisons. Of the
total, they have been allotted Rs 2 crore just for setting up CCTV
cameras. Officials said that to begin with, they have decided to
install cameras in eight central jails located at Kolhapur, Yerwada,
Nashik, Nagpur, Thane, Mumbai, Amravati, Taloja and a district jail in
Kalyan.

Audi
looks to enter Indian armoured car market with A8 L Security
German
auto major Audi is eyeing to enter the high-end armoured car market in
India with its A8 L Security model that could cost around Rs 5 crore,
and the first vehicle is likely to be delivered this year. The car is
completely customised with security gadgets and the price will vary
according to specifications that are put in place on requests of
individuals. The Audi A8 L Security is manufactured at a dedicated
high-security production facility in Germany in order to maintain
comprehensive secrecy of the entire process. Audi AG uses many premium
and strong materials such as high-strength steel, aramid fibre,
ceramic, multi-layer glass and a special aluminium alloy. The car
carries an armoured box for the vehicle and communication electronics.
The car also has the capacity to protect the passengers from chemical
attacks such as poisonous gas, he added.
Integrated Systems is the name of the Game: Schneider Electric
Schneider Electric believes that the new trend for the current year is
going to indicate exciting things in the security industry even if
purse strings are expected to get tighter. Speaking to Security
update, Mr Nikhil Pathak of Schneider Electric says that he believes
that IP is going to be much in demand in 2012 and people are
increasingly going to be looking at integrated systems at an
altogether new level. “Biometrics is also going to play a significant
role and more and more people are going to ask for biometrics. Another
significant trend in the New Year is going to be that people are going
to start looking closely at video storage because capturing video is
one thing and sharing it is another. So a good storage system is going
to be important and people are going to look closely at it” says Mr
Pathak.

UAV

Idiots now part of Defence Forces
The
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that awed viewers in the Bollywood hit 3
Idiots has been officially inducted into the paramilitary forces. The
Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
are using the drone, titled ‘Netra’, in counter-insurgency operations.
The autonomous UAV for surveillance and reconnaissance was inducted
into the paramilitary forces last month while the army, navy and
several state police forces have shown a keen interest in acquiring
it, say its makers. It was developed by Ideaforge Technology Pvt. Ltd,
a company floated by a group of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Mumbai
alumni, and the Pune-based Research and Development Establishment
(Engineers) laboratory of the Defence Research and Development
Organisation (DRDO). DRDO, after watching the film, tied up with
IdeaForge to refine the Netra. It is designed specifically for
anti-terrorist and counter-insurgency operations in forested areas. It
can be used in hostage situations, border infiltration monitoring,
local law enforcement operations, search and rescue operations,
disaster management and aerial photography.

Security experts discuss terror threats to aviation sector
With the aviation sector being under a perpetual terror threat, aviation
and security experts held a meeting recently to analyse challenges
faced by the industry and suggest mitigation measures. The huge growth
in air travel has made every airport a potential terror target, with
over 600 million people flying each year across the globe and millions
of bags that go along with them. A day-long conference, organised by
AviationWatch, had experts from the aviation sector, security and
related agencies discussing the potential threats. Representatives of
companies which produce high-tech security equipment, technologies and
software capable of securing the airports, were also present. Former
Civil Aviation Secretary, Ajay Prasad, former Chief of Bureau of Civil
Aviation Security, S R Mehra, Airports Authority of India Chairman V P
Agarwal and chiefs of security of Indian carriers participated in the
conference.
