First coastal surveillance cameras installed along Singapore shoreline

Installation of the first cameras for a coastal surveillance system by the Police Coast Guard began in January, police said in a statement. It first announced plans to build the network of 314 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for the Coastal Surveillance Camera System a year ago. These cameras, built along Singapore’s shoreline, are meant to detect intruders such as smugglers and potential terrorists. The plan is for all the cameras to be fully deployed by 2018. “The Coastal Surveillance Camera System is part of the Police Coast Guard’s efforts to enhance Singapore’s coastal security,” said the police in response to queries from The Straits Times. It added that the cameras would be progressively installed around the island in the months to come. The CCTV system adds on to Singapore’s maritime border defences, which include advanced electro-optic cameras, radar systems and boat patrols.
