Kerala police stations come under CCTV surveillance

All police stations in the state will soon come under round-the-clock camera surveillance of the concerned district police headquarters and state police headquarters. In the initial phase 239 police stations in 10 police districts have been identified for the project. The process for setting up the system is already on and it is expected to materialise in six months time. The project would be extended to other police stations in a phased manner, said police sources.

The project is expected to be a deterrent against unlawful activities like illegal detention of persons or torture at police stations. The facility could also ensure effective supervision and surprise checks of police stations by higher-ups. Two high resolution cameras with recording facility are proposed at each police station. The cameras would be located in such a manner to cover the entrance, receptions and areas like lock-up room. There were will be remote monitoring facility at all district police chief offices and state police headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.

“The total cost of the project is expected to be around `1.85 crore and tendering process is already on for six-year contract for installing and maintenance of the system,” said police sources. The 239 police stations to come under camera surveillance in the first phase include 21 in Thiruvananthapuram city, 37 in Thiruvananthapuram rural, 31 in Alappuzha, 22 in Kottayam, 17 in Kochi city, 34 in Ernakulam rural, 12 in Thrissur city, 21 in Palakkad, 24 in Malappuram and 20 in Kannur. Remote monitoring facility would be installed at the ten respective district police headquarters and one at police headquarters
