Kerala Police will set up drone research laboratory to address security threats, says DGP Anil Kant

Kerala’s new police chief DGP Anil Kant has said that the state police will set up a drone research laboratory to address the recent security threats posed by drones. The State Police chief’s announcement comes a day after the Army chief said that easy availability of drones has increased the complexity of security forces in the country.

Anil Kant was briefing the media in Thiruvananthapuram and said, “The drone research laboratory will be set up to address the latest security threats. Cyberdome will help us develop the lab. We will also consider collaborating with the union government in this research. The research will primarily address the recent security threats posed by drones.” Cyberdome is the technological research and development center of Kerala Police.

In his first press conference after taking charge, Anil Kant said that welfare of the police officers will be a high priority of the force. The department is also mulling over the possibilities of introducing health insurance for the police officers.

In the wake of recent reports of arms being seized, Anil Kant said that the state’s Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) will be strengthened. Additionally, the social media presence of the force will also be increased to counter cyber security threats. Anil Kant also hinted at the possibilities of enacting a law similar to Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) in Kerala. The MCOCA is a law enacted by Maharashtra to combat organised crime and terrorism. “We have already submitted a report to the government in this regard”, Anil Kant said.
