L&T bags Mumbai City Surveillance Project

In the aftermath of the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, the government has decided to strengthen surveillance by installing CCTV cameras at strategic locations across the city.

L&T Construction and L&T Infotech, both subsidiaries of Larsen & Toubro, have been selected for a surveillance project in Mumbai city. It is learnt that Infinova equipment will be used in the project. L&T companies emerged as the lowest bidders for the project, with a quote of Rs 950 crore. As per the order, L&T Construction and L&T Infotech will install about 6,000 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the metro.  The CCTV cameras installed will be closely monitored. Also, an emergency number along the lines of the 911 services in the US is planned to be set up.

Trimax IT Infrastructure and Services was another company in the fray by being among the lowest bidders. This is the fourth attempt by the Maharashtra state government to seek bids for the project, following three failed attempts previously. In the past, the tendering process had been cancelled three times over technical issues and none of the companies had come forward for the bidding. First announced after the 26/11 attacks in 2008, the project was initially pegged at `700 crore but costs escalated with the passage of time.
