Maharashtra to get country’s first security university

Maharashtra is all set to get the country’s first security university. The institute primarily aims at training officers in the best techniques to handle terrorism and other security issues. At present, there are only two such universities — one in the US and the other in Israel. Sources say that Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has already met the head of the security university in the US in this regard. Last month, professors from the university made a presentation to Fadnavis. If all goes well, the university is expected to come up either in Fadnavis’s hometown Nagpur, or in Pune. It is believed that Fadnavis is pushing the idea for Nagpur. The institute would require at least 100 hectares of land.

“Security is a prime issue on our minds. It’s the need of the hour as there is a demand for security intelligence globally,” said a senior officer, adding that the idea is in its preliminary stage and things such as location, criteria for admission and syllabus will be thought about later. “The syllabus will be intended to enhance desired analytical skills and competency in intelligence analysis to include critical thinking, communication, engagement and leadership. Security challenges, strategy planning and policy implementation facing India and the world will also be included. It will also look into cyber crimes,” said a senior official from the home department.
It is also likely to provide professional military education and develop leaders with the ability to operate and think creatively in an unpredictable and complex situation.
However, officials in the chief minister’s office maintained that it would be premature to comment in detail on the curriculum, but it was expected that trained staff from the US university would teach a batch in Nagpur which in turn would teach the next batch.
