The Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) has launched the pilot phase of a ‘smart monitoring and control system’. This will see the introduction of smart surveillance cameras in buses and taxis; meters; and a control centre. Four smart cameras have been installed in taxis; and eight on public buses. They aim to “enhance and provide the highest levels of security and safety”.
A smart meter system in taxis will see artificial intelligence (AI) improve fleet operations. All these will be linked to a smart control centre that will monitor bus and taxi fleets in real-time, 24 hours a day. Esmaeel Hasan Al Blooshi, General Manager of RAKTA, said these smart systems aim to strengthen the security system in the emirate. It is in response to government directives to “improve the quality of life for residents”.
The data generated by the systems will help decision-makers “improve and develop services”. “It will ensure the safety and security of commuters by reducing traffic accidents, complaints, and lost items.”
