Digi Yatra Foundation addresses tailgating concerns at airports

Officials report that stakeholders, including the Digi Yatra Foundation, are actively addressing tailgating concerns at airports through the Digi Yatra gates. This issue, highlighted by the aviation security watchdog BCAS, is being tackled with the implementation of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) within the Digi Yatra system, offering contactless and seamless entry at e-gates.

A hassle free and contact less entry into the airports through e-gates is done by using Facial Recognition Technology which is provided by the Digi Yatra. The term tailgating means when one more person along with the passenger is entering through the gate whereas only one credential for the entrance is submitted. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has pointed out the issue of tailgating at Digi Yatra gates entrance and they are figuring out the solutions to fix the problem, as an official said.

Digi Yatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi recently mentioned in an interview that the stakeholders are planning out ways to resolve the matter of tailgating. The main priority is to provide safety and security to the flyers, Khadakbhavi added.

He further elaborates that with the help of technology, the person who is tailgating can be barred from entering the airport by making the gate closed down quickly. Digi Yatra gates usually get closed at an ideal speed and if the closure of the gate is made faster then there is high chances of passengers getting hurt.

Khadakbhavi stated that the matter of tailgating has been discussed with different stakeholders and the people have to follow a systematic process in order to make entrance in the airport.

Passengers can make use of Digi Yatra services by registering their credentials on the Digi Yatra app. The app will require an Aadhaar based authentication and then one needs to capture their own image. After this, a boarding pass is generated by the app which needs to be scanned and then it can be shown at the e-gate. The passengers need to scan their bar-coded boarding pass at the e-gate and then the passenger identity is checked by the facial recognition system. After this, passengers can get access to the airport. However, a passenger needs to check in at the security desk and then board the flight.

The data of the individual is stored in an encrypted form in the Digi Yatra. ‘’The data details are stored in the individual phones and the passengers and are under their jurisdiction only’’, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation said.

As per current record, passengers can avail services of Digi Yatra at 14 airports and is expected to come up in 14 more additional airports by the end of this month. Around 5 million users are using Digi Yatra and the foundation is working towards making the journey of the passengers user- friendly.
