Heathrow Airport boosts security efficiency with advanced luggage-scanning technology

London Heathrow Airport has rolled out upgraded security scanners that allow passengers to pass through security without the need to remove liquids or electronics from their cabin luggage.

The UK’s busiest hub has become the world’s largest airport to fully implement next-generation CT security scanners, enabling faster, more efficient and less stressful passenger processing.

Completing the £1 billion technology upgrade, these scanners are now operational across all four terminals, streamlining security checks for thousands of passengers an hour while maintaining high safety and security standards.

The scanners’ advanced technology provides clearer images of cabin baggage, enabling faster security checks and reducing preparation time and passenger flow during peak travel periods.

In addition, the scanners are projected to save nearly 16 million plastic bags per year.
These upgrades are part of Heathrow Airport’s long-term investment programme, designed to enhance the passenger experience and support future growth and higher traffic volumes.

These improvements build on the airport’s 2025 recognition as the most punctual hub, with 97% of passengers clearing security in less than five minutes, and help maintain its status as the world’s most connected airport.

Heathrow Airport CEO Thomas Woldbye said: “Every Heathrow passenger can now leave their liquids and laptops in their bags at security as we become the largest airport in the world to roll out the latest security scanning technology. That means less time preparing for security and more time enjoying their journey – and millions fewer single-use plastic bags.
“This billion-pound investment means our customers can be confident they will continue to have a great experience at Heathrow.”
