Railway security officers in Italy will be equipped with body cameras

Railway security officers in Italy will be equipped with body cameras after the state railway group FS Italiane reached an agreement with trade unions to equip the operational staff of FS Security, the company responsible for safety in stations and on trains.

The agreement comes after a trial phase carried out during 2025 and marks the transition to permanent use of bodycams, with the aim of enhancing the safety of railway staff and passengers, especially in areas and situations considered sensitive.

The introduction of bodycams was discussed and agreed with the unions, with clear conditions of use and protective measures for employees defined in accordance with data protection and privacy legislation.

The devices will be activated only in situations where there are potential risks to the safety of the operator or other persons. Once turned on, the bodycams will record both image and sound.

An important element of the system is the real-time transmission of images, sound, and geolocation data to the FS Security command center. This allows for rapid monitoring of incidents and support for interventions in critical situations.

The images will be stored in encrypted form and cannot be accessed, downloaded, or deleted by the operators wearing the bodycams, a measure designed to ensure transparency and proper use of the system.

The decision to expand the use of bodycams is based on the results of tests carried out in 2025, which demonstrated their effectiveness as a tool for deterring aggressive behavior and increasing safety in the railway environment.
