In a major technology upgrade for policing, the Delhi Police is set to use robotic vehicles to handle suspected bombs, explosives, ammunition and other suspicious or hazardous objects.
The Delhi Police Special Cell conducted a formal demonstration of the technology at the Delhi Police Headquarters on Thursday. The robotic system, known as a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), is designed to allow police personnel to handle suspicious materials without directly approaching them. A key feature of the remotely operated vehicle is its ability to lift and transport suspicious materials weighing between 8 kg and 50 kg.
The vehicle can be deployed during emergency situations where a suspected bomb, explosive or other hazardous object is found. It can approach the object, lift it and transport it to a designated safe location without requiring direct human intervention. The technology is aimed at keeping police personnel away from potential danger while dealing with sensitive situations involving suspected explosive devices or other hazardous materials.
The demonstration at the Delhi Police Headquarters was inspected by Special Cell DCP Praveer Kumar Tripathi and his team. During the demonstration, officials evaluated the remotely operated vehicle’s operational mechanism, load-bearing capacity and potential utility during emergency situations.
Several companies also participated in the demonstration and presented their robotic systems to police officials. The use of the remotely operated vehicle is part of the Delhi Police’s broader focus on integrating modern technology into its security framework.
In sensitive operations involving suspected explosives or bomb-like objects, the robotic system can allow police personnel to maintain a safer distance while the suspicious material is lifted and moved to a designated location
