India is accelerating the development of a highly advanced, automated security network to protect its vast and complex borders. Spearheading this initiative is the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which is creating a suite of homegrown technologies—ranging from artificial intelligence (AI) to directed-energy weapons—aimed at detecting, tracking, and neutralising threats.
In a recent interview, Dr. B.K. Das, Director General of Electronics and Communication Systems at DRDO, explained that relying on physical infrastructure like fences is no longer enough.
The future of border security lies in robust, electronic systems. To achieve this, DRDO is building an end-to-end security chain packed with next-generation innovations. To catch intruders before they can cause harm, DRDO is developing high-tech detection systems. These include fibre-optic sensors, high-resolution and infrared cameras, as well as hyperspectral and multispectral imaging tools. For round-the-clock monitoring regardless of weather conditions, advanced radar networks and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are being integrated.
Dr. Das emphasised that these sensors will be backed by a highly secure and powerful communication infrastructure. This ensures that the moment a threat is detected, the information is instantly relayed across the security network for rapid action.
One of the most critical challenges on the modern battlefield is the rise of rogue drones used for smuggling, reconnaissance, and attacks. To counter this, DRDO has already developed its first generation of counter-drone technologies, such as the D4 Anti-Drone System, which has been transferred to Indian industries like Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for mass production and deployed in sensitive areas.
These systems use a combination of radar, electro-optical sensors, and radio frequency detectors to spot and identify suspicious drones. Once identified, the system can choose between two methods to eliminate the threat:
● Soft Kill: Disrupting the drone’s electronics or jamming its communication and GPS signals.
● Hard Kill: Physically destroying the drone using directed-energy weapons (DEWs), such as high-powered lasers.
India has already successfully developed laser systems of varying power levels and is actively researching advanced high-power microwaves to disable the electronics of hostile drones.
