Maharashtra Police officers to be tested for legal acumen

The investigative and legal acumen of police staff, especially while filing FIRs and charge-sheets, will be evaluated henceforth. In a significant move to enhance conviction rates, the Maharashtra home department has empowered the divisional level police officials to evaluate the investigative capacity of their subordinates while writing their confidential reports. Such an evaluation at the middle or lower rungs of the police cadre has never been undertaken before. Divisional officials have been empowered to evaluate the performance of prosecutors to get better conviction rates, create a panel of performing prosecutors, hike allowances for eyewitnesses, and create a record of charge-sheets for evaluation.
