More than a year late, but project to secure prisons nears completion

PWD’s project to install 1,248 CCTV cameras at Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli prison complexes is nearing completion, with 95% of the work done, according to the latest status report.
The project, which began in 2022, was aimed at making the city’s jails more secure. The initial deadline was six months.

Under the project, the department is installing 556 cameras with dual recording and 160 face-recognition cameras at Tihar jail complex, 185 cameras with dual recording and 20 face-recognition cameras at Rohini and 507 cameras with dual recording and 100 face-recognition cameras at Mandoli. The facial recognition cameras are expected to tighten the security inside the prison complexes. The new feature will detect and match the faces of people looking at the camera and generate an alert in case any blacklisted person appears in the field of view.

According to PWD officials, while adding the cameras, the department will integrate the existing video surveillance set-up at the prison complexes and create more storage facilities with three high-definition display ports.

Jail authorities had earlier claimed this was the first time such cameras were being installed.
“The facial recognition system will be able to broadly match a suspect/criminal photograph with a database, created using a photos/images database available with different government authorities and local police,” the project plan states.
