NEC launches dual face biometric and fever detection system for access control

In a heavyweight addition to the increasingly-crowded market for fever detection and biometric facial recognition technology, NEC has launched NeoFace Thermal Express to provide touchless screening. The new offering combines elevated body temperature (EBT) detection, detection of personal protective equipment, such as face masks, and NeoFace biometrics on a scalable and modular platform with video and thermal analytics.

In a LinkedIn post by NEC VP of Federal Business Benji Hutchinson, the company announced the EBT and biometric screening solution, touting its fast results and high accuracy. NEC’s facial recognition algorithms have finished at or near the top in several categories of testing by NIST.

The system also supports high customer throughput to improve customer experiences and reduce lengthy queues, according to the company. NeoFace Thermal Express runs on NEC’s cloud-based Digital Services Platform, which provides sensor management, algorithm orchestration, scalability and interoperability. The solution combines NeoFace technology with infrared sensors for thermal imaging, and can be implemented for contactless access control based on identification and safety rules.

Sensors include FDA-certified devices for EBT screening in conjunction with other evaluation methods to provide high accuracy within 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit, low margins of error, and adaptability, according to the announcement.

The company suggests building access points, airport and seaport border gates, border crossings, stadiums and theme parks among possible locations for beneficial deployment in one-to-one or one-to-many applications. Workflows with centralized or edge processing are supported, and comprehensive customer support is provided by NEC’s Biometrics Operations Support Service (BOSS) center. The LPGA recently adopted NEC’s facial recognition to secure its offices, and eventually tour events
