More than 300 cases have been filed against motorists in the past week for violating traffic laws under an artificial intelligence-powered CCTV camera monitoring system, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner (Acting) Md Sarwar said.
We started the process of automated case filing a week ago. We hope the system will be fully operational within the next six months by placing such cameras at key points across the city, reducing the need for traffic sergeants and inspectors to file cases manually,” he said while inaugurating traffic signal lights on Airport Road in Uttara this afternoon.
“In the last one week, over 300 cases were filed. It is just the beginning and our technological teams are working to install the AI-based system at all modern CCTV cameras, especially those installed at traffic signal points, to detect traffic rule violations,” he said.
The number of cases could exceed 1,000 a day once the system becomes fully operational across the capital, he added, saying the initiative had been taken to bring discipline to city roads.
Under the system, digital cases will automatically be filed if vehicles violate traffic signals, drive on the wrong side of the road or commit other traffic offences, he said, adding that violators would be able to view details of their offences. The DMP commissioner also said the initiative was not aimed at punishing people, but rather at restoring discipline on the city streets.
