CCTV on JNU campus to track outsiders?

Delhi Police has proposed to install CCTV cameras on JNU campus to monitor the movement of “outsiders”. The cameras would also help cops prevent clashes that often ensue on the campus because of the highly charged political atmosphere, they said. However, the proposal would have to be approved by the university administration first.

A report prepared by Delhi Police special branch stated that security personnel posted at the university didn’t have the logistics to cover the entire campus. The matter was earlier discussed with the JNU vice-chancellor in October last year, but couldn’t be enforced due to protests from the students. It is proposed that the control room for the CCTVs be set up inside the campus and monitored by the JNU security staff who can inform the police. Sources say the special branch has identified some spots such as Ganga Dhaba, Sabarmati Dhaba and the administration block.
